Coach Bateman Q & A

The official Ball State football site is once again doing a Q & A session this offseason with all of the coaches on the coaching staff,  offensive coordinator Rich Skrosky was the first coach they interviewed and defensive coordinator Jay Bateman was interviewed this week. Coach Bateman says the defense will be improved next season in part because this will be their second year in the system and they continue to improve at picking up the scheme. Coach Bateman sounded pretty excited about the additions of Jonathan Newsome, Matthew Mosley, and Osazuwamgn Igbinosun to the defensive line for next season. You can read the rest of the Q & A session here.

No question is was frustrating seeing the Cardinals defense look like it was defending against a gaming prodigy in NCAA Football last season, but I think there are some reasons to be optimistic about the Cardinals defense next season. First of all they will be in their second season of running the same scheme so they have a better chance on excelling at the little things the average fan won’t notice but is the difference between stopping a play for little or no gain and giving up a big play. Secondly, part of the reason the defense was so bad last season was the secondary was patched together every week due to injuries. It’s unlikely the injury bug will bite Ball State as hard again, if you line up next to the same guy every day and practice and during games, you’re going to start performing better as a unit.
